Musical Cafe is always looking for talented musical theatre actors and singers. Once Showcase selections are made, we hold auditions for that Showcase. Creative teams cast their own selections, and we do our best to announce casting needs ahead of the auditions. Performance stipends to help cover transportation and other costs may be offered by the creatives. At this point, we can only cast non-AEA actors, sorry!

We encourage actors to work with more than one creative team in a Showcase. All scheduling availability, conflicts, and other matters must be openly and thoroughly communicated with the entire Showcase production team. Carpooling to rehearsals and so on is encouraged, and should be arranged independently.

What to Prepare for Audition:

Two (2) contrasting 16-bar songs

One 1-minute contemporary monologue

If you don’t have a monologue prepared, we will provide a side for cold reading

What to Bring to Your Audition:

  • One (1) copy of your headshot

  • Sheet music in your key marked to 16-bar length

  • Twelve (12) copies of your resume

An accompanist will be provided.

If you cannot make this audition date but would like to be considered, please email us your resume, headshot, and any helpful links (e.g., audio files). Please include whether you wish to be considered for any and all parts in any showcase, a particular showcase, a particular showcase selection, or a particular role.

To request an audition time, email musicalcafesfo@gmail.com. Put “Showcase Auditions” in the subject line and include your phone number in your email. We will answer you as promptly as possible.

Directors are essential to our Showcase process because of our commitment to providing creatives a chance to work with and learn from other production talents. So we ask that each creative team works with a director to present their Showcase material. Creatives may, of course, teach and rehearse their own material as much as they like!

If you wish to be added to our mailing list as a possible director, please email us here, keeping the subject line as is.

Creatives are free to reach out and work with any director who grasps our production process. Creatives needing director recommendations are free to reach out to Musical Cafe team members, alumni, and so on. Stipends to help cover transportation and so forth may be offered by the creatives, but are not guaranteed.

Directors may work with more than one team in any given Showcase, keeping in mind the challenge this presents to scheduling and transportation.

Because Musical Cafe places an emphasis on the words and notes of musical works-in-progress, our approach to tech is minimal. So other than up-and-down lights to bookend each Showcase selection, we have no sound or lighting needs.

Depending on the Showcase venue, we may require a volunteer to handle light cues. If you can operate a lighting board, feel free to contact us here, keeping the subject line as is.

While props and costume elements are welcome, we ask creative teams to limit them to what their actors can carry on and off.
